Priority Services Register
A free register held by suppliers and network operators that prioritises support for vulnerable customers during outages and emergencies.
The Priority Services Register is a free, voluntary register operated by every UK gas and electricity supplier, by Distribution Network Operators (electricity) and Gas Distribution Networks, and by water companies. Registration entitles the registered person or premises to additional support — typically in the form of priority restoration during outages, advance notice of planned interruptions, alternative communications, and additional safety measures during meter work.
Eligibility includes domestic customers who are:
- Of pensionable age, or have a child under five.
- Disabled, blind or partially sighted, deaf or hard of hearing.
- Reliant on medical equipment that requires power or water.
- Recovering from injury or living with a long-term medical condition.
For non-domestic premises housing vulnerable people — care homes, supported living, hospices, day centres — registration is best practice and frequently required by sector regulators or commissioners. The same notice should be served to every utility provider serving the premises (gas, electricity, water and the relevant network operators), because the registers are operated separately and a notice on one does not automatically appear on the others.
